Memes

Most people when browsing the internet, will at one point or another come in contact with something known as a meme.  A meme is an interesting concept that many people may have difficulty explaining to others, I am one of these people.  So instead of giving you my own definition we will use the one from the crown jewel of internet knowledge, www.wikipedia.org

An Internet meme is an idea that is propagated through the World Wide Web.  The idea may take the form of a hyperlink, video, picture, website, hashtag, or just a word or phrase, such as intentionally misspelling the word "more" as "moar" or "the" as "teh".  The meme may spread from person to person via social networks, blogs, direct email, news sources, or other web-based services.

I personally love using memes, ever since facebook allowed a preview of a picture whenever you linked one in a comment, I've been using them to express thought or feelings.  Usually at an attempt at humor, which is then sometimes lost when people don't understand memes.

In this blog, I'll just be having some fun, relating meme information to people who may or may not understand what they are.  I will be covering my favorite meme's and telling you why I think they are so awesome.

Meme music video

Here is a fun music video that is chalk full of awesomeness.  In this video everything is a meme, including the music.  You should recognize some things here from just being exposed to funny stuff from the internet.  Stuff like the Nyan Cat and Numa Numa guy.  Enjoy!  All credit goes to The Gag Quartet.

Ragefaces

Ragefaces are a set of faces, usually seen in a ragecomic,(a comic consisting of ragefaces...).  These are just kinda like stickers of a head to put on a body to show what that person is doing, thinking, or is acting like or anything of that type.

There are more faces than this but this pictures shows a good amount of them

When making a ragecomic, a person will add captions to these faces, and maybe if they are feeling a little motivated add some additional..."art".

Because it would take forever and a day to go over every one of these we are going to do just one, Trollface

Trollface represents the individual depicted as being a troll, or trolling.  So we need to understand what trolling is.  Again to our fabulous wikipedia.

In Internet slange, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.  The noun troll may refer to the provacative message itself, as in: "That was an excellent troll you posted".

Below is a video tutorial of how to troll.

Did you try to click the play button?  If so you've been trolled.  Get the idea?  The whole idea of trolling is to get whoever the target is frustrated, flustered, or upset somehow.  If they start to argue with you that is an added bonus.

Another popular use of this meme is troll physics, or trollscience.<-Click on this to find out more about trollscience.  I'll jump right in and show you some troll science in action.

Another aspect of a depicted troll is the curly arms and legs you can see above in this comic.

You should be getting the idea of what a rageface is,(vaguely), and what a troll is.  Next time someone says you're being trolled you won't be out in the dark.
LoLcats

Ok lets start off by breaking this down.  LoLcats has two parts, LoL, and cats.  If you don't know what lol means, you probably shouldn't be on the internet.  And if you don't know what a cat is, you should probably go outside.  Assuming you do know that lol is an acronym for, laugh out loud, and that a cat is a small, usually domesticated animal, that poops in a box, has a long tail, and I am horribly allergic to.  We shall analyze the awesomeness of the lolcat.

First off we'll let Jenna Marbles, a youtube sensation with a very popular channel, explain a bit of internet wisdom with a gif from one of her vodcasts.

She's not wrong, simple lolcat pictures have made me laugh harder than a normal human being should at a few pixels and a caption.  People have been doing this for more than a hundred years, one such man was Harry Pointer.  He used an early camera to take pictures of cats in different settings and added captions to give it that lolcat flavor, although I don't think the term lol existed at the time...  Here is an example of one of his pictures.
Cute isn't it?  Modern lolcats have evolved to where more often than not, the caption is the cat talking.  And you can almost hear their little voice in your head talking to you.  Iconic with bad grammar and spelling.  Sayings such as, "I can haz cheezburger?", or "I made you a cookie but i eated it", are well known to have a cat attached to them.

The cats present an interesting phenomenon.  The more of them you see the funnier they are.  To the point where you have to start laughing to yourself because anyone else seeing this will think you're insane...  However it is common knowledge that I am crazy, so I'll just share a few of my favorite lolcats with you.

Just look at these cats!  Aren't they hilarious?!  If you don't think so you should just save yourself the pain and stop reading now.  Hopefully though, you understand why lolcats are such an important part of the internet's culture and language.  Thanks for reading, go laugh at some cats!
